A day in the life of
Jack.
My subject, Jack, has
been my best friend since we first started school 14 years ago. Over time he
has developed daily routines that he hasn’t shook since he was very young for
example he can’t start the day without his tea and biscuits. Routines that
maybe you find weird, or unusual or simply unnecessary. However for Jack, his
day starts and ends with completed routines. It’s not quite to the point of OCD
as he’s not upset or on edge if he hasn’t done these things, he just
un-knowingly does the same or similar things nearly every day.
The same goes for most people, we have things that we
do every day and certain ways to complete tasks. Such as making a cup of tea,
teabag, water, milk, then, sugar? Or milk, sugar, teabag then water? There is
no correct way to complete the terribly confusing task of making a cup of tea
however everyone creates their own unwritten rules that they have to follow.
People have explored what different ideas of a ‘Day in
the life’ project. Such as Life with Boys by Colie James who is a mother
herself. She follows families and people and takes pictures of their daily
life. She says she is interested in other how other people live and love. She
mainly takes pictures of families in their home as she says “I’d rather eat
glass than take a picture outside”.
I like
Colie’s style and her interest in other people’s
life. In my project I will do the same, I will follow Jack through his daily
life and capture what he does and how he goes about doing certain things.
I
think routines change and develop over time as we get older, for as long as
Jack and I have known each other we’ve been at school together which forced us
into a daily routine. Like getting up early, completing each lesson, going
home, having dinner and going to bed. Things we do when were young are
different to what we do when we’re a teenager; things we do as a teenager we
may not do when we’re adults. Things such as checking your emails, that’s
something you do more as an adult and not when you’re younger. But some things
stay the same, the routine of going to school every day is similar as the
routine of going to work every day.
A
day in the life of jack consists of certain things. He wakes up and has a cup
of tea with two sugars accompanied by rich tea and chocolate digestive
biscuits. He sits in the same place all day (if he doesn’t have school) and
watches videos on his iPad, typically YouTubers of his preferred choice.
I
chose to make my project on a Day in the life of Jack because we’ve been
friends for such a long time and his daily life has never completely changed.
And I think that’s great.
